Down Syndrome is the most common genetic disorder in existence. One in every 800-1,000 live births is a child with Down Syndrome, for a total of 350,000 people in the US alone. Down Syndrome occurs when an extra portion of the 21 chromosome is present in an individual’s genetic code. The extra bit of chromosome slows a person’s behavioral and physical development, but with proper education and support, individuals with Down Syndrome can lead productive and fulfilling lives.

PMI appreciates the opportunity to work with Missouri-based charity, First Downs for Down Syndrome. Founded by NFL coach Gene Stallings, FDFDS strives to provide emotional, educational, and medical support to those affected with Down Syndrome and their families. In Coach Stalling’s book , “Another Season: A Coach’s Story of Raising an Exceptional Son”, Stallings details his experience coaching football and raising a son with Down Syndrome. The situation and struggles of those with Down Syndrome and their families is near and dear to Stallings’ heart. FDFDS works with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs to host fund raisers and events that support local organizations: The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City and The Down Syndrome Clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital. With their combined efforts, these organizations provide families of those with Down Syndrome with education, emotional support, and medical help when necessary.

In September, FDFDS will be supporting the Kansas City Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk and Festival – a fund raiser and celebration for families affected by Down Syndrome. With PMI’s support, FDFDS is able to contribute to and host events to benefit those with Down Syndrome in our local community.
